More information about the Hylocereus Undatus

Hylocereus undatus – Dragonfruit Cactus

The Hylocereus undatus , better known as the Dragonfruit Cactus , is not only a spectacular sight, but also the source of the exotic and healthy dragonfruit. With its striking, climbing stems and impressive flowers, this cactus is a real eye-catcher, both indoors and in the garden. Originally from tropical and subtropical areas of Central and South America, the Hylocereus is now cultivated worldwide for its fruit.

Characteristics of the Dragon Fruit Cactus

The Hylocereus undatus is distinguished by its long, green stems with wavy edges and sharp thorns. In the right climate, this cactus produces enormous, nocturnal flowers that spread a wonderful scent. After flowering, the striking dragon fruits develop with their pink skin and white flesh full of black seeds. These fruits are not only beautiful, but also nutritious and delicious.

Dragon Fruit Cactus Care

Location: The Dragonfruit Cactus needs a lot of light and does best in a sunny spot, such as a windowsill or conservatory. In warmer climates it can also be grown outdoors.

Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In summer it needs a little more water, while in winter it needs less water. Avoid waterlogging.

Soil: Use a well-draining cactus soil to prevent root rot. A pot with drainage holes is essential.

Temperature: The ideal temperature is between 18-30°C. Protect the cactus from cold and frost, because temperatures below 10°C can cause damage.

Feeding: Give cactus food once a month during the growth period (spring and summer). Additional feeding is not necessary in winter.

Grow and Enjoy Dragon Fruit Cactus

With the right care, the Hylocereus undatus can produce beautiful fruits in a suitable climate. Although this is less common in a Dutch living room, the plant is still a unique decorative addition. The flowers are a real treat and the sculptural stems add an exotic element to any interior.
