Flower maintenance: keep your flowers beautiful for longer

At The plant Farmer we understand how important it is to keep your flowers radiant and fresh. Whether you have brought a beautiful bouquet into your home or received a gift, with the right care you can enjoy your flowers even longer. We are happy to share our tips and advice to optimally maintain your flowers.

1. A fresh start: cut the stems diagonally

Make sure your flowers can absorb water well by cutting the stems diagonally. Use a sharp knife or secateurs and cut at least 2 cm from the stem. This prevents vase bacteria from blocking the water absorption.

2. Choose the right vase and fill with clean water

A clean vase is essential to prevent bacteria formation. Fill the vase with lukewarm water and add the flower food provided if necessary. The right food helps your flowers to stay beautiful longer.

3. Pay attention to the location

Flowers will last longer in a cool place, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources such as radiators. Also avoid draughts and don’t place your flowers next to a fruit bowl – fruit gives off ethylene gas, which causes flowers to wilt faster.

4. Change the water regularly

Change the water in the vase every 2 to 3 days and rinse the vase well. This prevents bacteria formation and ensures that your flowers stay fresh.

5. Remove wilted flowers and leaves

Check regularly for wilted flowers or leaves and remove them immediately. This prevents bacteria from spreading and affecting other flowers.

6. Extra tips for specific flowers

Some flowers require extra attention:

Roses : Dip the stems briefly in boiling water if they become limp. This helps the roses to absorb water better.

Tulips : Fill the vase with less water, because tulips continue to grow in the vase.

Orchids : Do not fill a vase, but spray water on the roots and keep them out of direct sunlight.

Why flower maintenance is important

With the right care, you can not only enjoy your flowers longer, but you also enhance their color, scent and vitality. A well-maintained bouquet is a beautiful eye-catcher in the home and brings a fresh atmosphere to any room.
