More information about the Echinocactus

Echinocactus – Spiny Ball Cactus or Mother-in-law's Cushion

The Echinocactus , also known as the spiny ball cactus or the iconic “Mother-in-law's seat cushion”, is a striking cactus known for its spherical appearance and impressive spines. This cactus originates from the deserts of North and Central America and is a perfect addition to both indoor and outdoor decorations. Its special appearance makes it an absolute eye-catcher in any interior.

Why choose an Echinocactus?

The Echinocactus is a real eye-catcher thanks to its symmetrical, round shape and thick, golden yellow or white spines. It is ideal for minimalist and modern interior styles, but can also serve as a unique addition to your garden or terrace. In addition, the Echinocactus is very easy to maintain and suitable for everyone, from novice plant lovers to experienced collectors.

Caring for the Echinocactus

Location: Place the cactus in a light spot with lots of direct sunlight. It can tolerate bright sunlight and likes warmth.

Watering: Water moderately. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings and avoid waterlogging. It needs less water in winter.

Temperature: The Echinocactus thrives best in temperatures between 20-30°C. Make sure it is not exposed to temperatures below 10°C.

Soil: Use well-draining cactus soil to prevent root rot. Add sand or grit for extra drainage if necessary.

Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer) you can give it a cactus fertilizer once a month. In the winter it does not need feeding.

Decorative value

The Echinocactus instantly adds character to any space. Whether placed as a solitary plant or combined with other cacti and succulents, its striking shape and spines make it a real showstopper. Its robustness and easy-care nature make it ideal for both indoors and outdoors. Use it as a striking centrepiece on a windowsill, in a rockery or in a modern plant arrangement.
