Care and maintenance of Selenicereus – Moonflower cactus
Share
The Selenicereus , better known as the Moonflower Cactus, is a special species of cactus that gets its name from its spectacular flowers that only bloom at night. This cactus, native to tropical and subtropical regions of America, is prized for its graceful, climbing habit and its enchanting flowers that emit a strong, sweet scent. Although these flowers often only bloom for one night, their beauty is breathtaking.
The Selenicereus thrives best in a spot with bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can damage the stems, while too little light can prevent flowering. In spring and summer it can be placed outside in a sheltered spot, but bring it inside in autumn and winter to protect it from cold and frost.
In terms of watering, the Selenicereus likes regular, but not excessive watering. Allow the potting soil to dry out completely between waterings, as soil that is too moist can cause root rot. During the winter months, when the plant is dormant, it needs little water.
Use a well-draining potting soil that is specially formulated for cacti and succulents. A mixture of potting soil and sand or perlite will provide proper drainage. The Selenicereus grows best in a pot with drainage holes to drain excess water.
Fertilizing is essential during the growth period in spring and summer. Use a liquid cactus fertilizer and dose monthly. Stop fertilizing during the dormant period in autumn and winter.
Because the Selenicereus is a climbing cactus, it needs support. Use a moss pole, trellis or hang it in a hanging pot so that the stems can grow freely. Pruning long, spreading stems is possible to keep the plant compact, but do not prune too much to ensure future flowering.
