Care and maintenance of Schlumbergera – Christmas cactus
Share
The Schlumbergera , better known as the Christmas Cactus, is a popular houseplant that gets its name from its festive flowering around the month of December. This cactus, native to the humid rainforests of Brazil, has a unique appearance with flat, segmented leaves and flowers in striking shades of pink, red, white and purple. Despite its name, the Christmas Cactus is a relatively easy plant to care for.
The Schlumbergera thrives best in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can damage the leaves, while too little light can reduce flowering. Therefore, place the plant in a light spot, such as a north- or east-facing window. In the summer, you can place it outside in a shady spot, but protect it from rain and bright sunlight.
The water requirement of the Schlumbergera varies per season. In spring and summer, during the growth phase, the plant needs regular watering. Make sure that the soil remains moist but not wet, as this can lead to root rot. In autumn and winter, when the plant is dormant, you should water less. Let the top layer of soil dry out completely before watering again.
An airy, well-draining potting soil is essential for the Schlumbergera . Choose a soil mix that is suitable for cacti and possibly add some perlite for extra drainage. A pot with drainage holes is important to drain excess water.
Fertilizing is especially useful during the growth period in spring and summer. Use a liquid fertilizer suitable for cacti or houseplants and dose monthly. Stop fertilizing once the plant starts to flower in the fall.
To encourage the Christmas cactus to flower every year, it is important to give it a rest period in the fall. Place it in a cool place with less light and give it little water. As soon as the flower buds appear, you can place it in a light place again and increase the watering.
