Care and maintenance of Prunus lusitanica (Portuguese laurel)
Share
The Prunus lusitanica , better known as Portuguese laurel, is an elegant, evergreen plant that is often used as a hedge plant or solitary. Its dark green, glossy leaves and refined appearance make this plant a popular choice in many gardens. With the right care, the Portuguese laurel will remain healthy and beautiful for years.
The Portuguese laurel grows best in well-drained, humus-rich soil. Although the plant is somewhat drought-resistant, especially once it is well-established, regular watering during dry periods will help it grow healthily. Make sure the soil does not remain too wet, as this can cause root rot. The plant likes a sunny to semi-shaded position, but can also survive in shady areas, albeit with a slightly slower growth rate.
Pruning is essential to keep the Portuguese laurel compact and neat, especially when used as a hedge. The best time to prune is after flowering in June or July. However, you can also prune the plant lightly in spring to maintain its shape. Use sharp pruning shears and make sure to remove any damaged or dead branches. The plant grows relatively quickly, which means that it will quickly become nice and full again after pruning.
Fertilisation is not always necessary, but to stimulate growth, you can add organic fertiliser or a specific hedge fertiliser in the spring. This ensures that the leaves retain their deep green colour and that the plant remains healthy.
