Verzorging en onderhoud van de Portulacaria afra – Olifantenplant

Care and maintenance of the Portulacaria afra – Elephant plant

The Portulacaria afra , commonly known as the elephant plant or spekboom, is a versatile and easy-care succulent. It originates from South Africa and is known for its thick, glossy leaves and robust stems. In its natural habitat, it serves as a food source for elephants, hence the name. This plant is not only aesthetically pleasing, but is also known for its ability to absorb CO₂ from the air, making it a sustainable choice for both indoors and outdoors.

The elephant plant prefers a sunny position. Indoors it will thrive in a spot with plenty of direct or bright indirect sunlight, such as a south-facing windowsill. Outdoors it can be placed on a sunny patio or in a rockery, as long as it is protected from temperatures below 5°C. It is not frost-hardy, so make sure you bring it indoors during the winter months in cold climates.

Like other succulents, the Portulacaria afra requires little water. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings and be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot. Less water is needed in the winter, as the plant is in a dormant period. Use a well-draining potting soil, preferably a mixture specifically for succulents and cacti, to quickly drain excess moisture.

The elephant plant needs little fertilization. A diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) is enough to keep it strong and healthy. It grows relatively slowly, but if it gets too big, you can easily prune it. The pruned branches can even be used to propagate new plants.
