Verzorging en onderhoud van de Paeonia (Pioenroos)

Care and maintenance of the Paeonia (Peony)

The Paeonia , better known as the Peony , is a true classic in the garden. With its large, romantic flowers and wonderful scent, the peony is a favorite among garden lovers. Although the flowers are often associated with lavish bouquets, peonies are also excellent garden plants that can bloom for years with the right care.

Peonies grow best in a sunny to semi-shaded location with well-drained, fertile soil. It is important that the soil does not become too wet, as the roots are susceptible to rot. When planting new peonies, make sure that the plant is not planted too deep. The root buds (also called 'eyes') should not be more than 2-3 centimetres below the soil; otherwise they may refuse to flower.

Provide the plant with sufficient water during dry periods, especially in spring when the buds start to grow. Fertilize the peony in spring with an organic fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering. After flowering, you can prune away the faded flowers to allow energy to flow back to the roots. The plant itself does not need to be pruned; the foliage dies back naturally in autumn and can be removed in spring.

Peonies are notorious for taking a while to establish themselves. It can take a year or two for a new plant to bloom. But once established, a healthy peony can continue to grow and bloom in the same spot for decades.
