Care and maintenance of Opuntia microdasys – Disc cactus or Rabbit ear cactus

The Opuntia microdasys , better known as the disc cactus or rabbit ear cactus , is a charming creature that gets its nickname from its distinctive oval “disks” that resemble rabbit ears. This cactus, native to Mexico, is loved for its unique appearance and relatively easy care. The Opuntia microdasys is an excellent choice for cactus lovers and beginners looking to add something special to their plant collection.

This cactus thrives best in a sunny spot. Place it on a windowsill with plenty of direct sunlight, preferably facing south, so it gets enough light to help it grow. Make sure it is not exposed to draughts or fluctuations in temperature, as although it can handle heat, it is sensitive to cold. You can place it outside during the summer months, but bring it inside before temperatures drop below 10°C.

When it comes to watering, Opuntia microdasys is very frugal. Only water it when the soil has dried out completely. This usually means once every three to four weeks in spring and summer, and even less often in autumn and winter. Make sure that excess water can drain well, because the cactus absolutely does not tolerate wet feet. Use a well-draining cactus soil or a mix of potting soil and sand to prevent waterlogging.

Fertilization is not needed often, but can be helpful during the growing season (spring and summer). Use a diluted cactus fertilizer to provide the cactus with extra nutrients. Note: over-fertilization can do more harm than good, so stick to once a month or less.

Pruning is usually not necessary for Opuntia microdasys unless you want to remove damaged or unwanted fronds. Always wear gloves when handling the cactus, as the small spines, known as glochids , can easily pierce the skin and cause irritation.
