Care and maintenance of Nepeta (Catnip)

Nepeta, commonly known as catnip, is a popular perennial plant that is loved by gardeners and animals alike. Its soft, grey leaves and charming flowers in blue-purple shades add a natural look to any garden. In addition, Nepeta is low-maintenance and has a long flowering period, making it an ideal choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.

Nepeta grows best in a sunny spot, although partial shade is also acceptable. The plant likes well-drained soil and can cope well with dry periods, making it suitable for gardens with sandy or stony soil. To encourage flowering and keep the plant healthy, it is advisable to remove faded flowers regularly. This not only promotes a neat appearance, but often also ensures a second flowering later in the season.

Watering is easy: Nepeta needs little water and tolerates drought well. Only water the plant during extremely dry periods and avoid overwatering. Too much water can lead to root rot, something Nepeta is susceptible to. Fertilizing is generally not necessary, but if you notice that the plant is growing less vigorously, you can give it a light dose of organic fertilizer in the spring.

An additional advantage of Nepeta is that it is not very susceptible to pests and diseases. Its aromatic leaves act as a natural repellent against many harmful insects. It is also winter-hardy and does not require extra protection against frost. Prune the plant back to just above the ground in autumn or early spring to prepare it for the new season.
