Hyacinth Care and Maintenance

Hyacinths, with their striking flowers and delightful scent, are a beautiful addition to any garden or interior. They are easy to care for, provided you follow a few simple guidelines. It all starts with planting the bulbs in the fall, between September and November. Choose a spot in the garden with well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. Dig a hole about 10 to 15 centimeters deep and place the bulb with the point upwards.

Hyacinths need moderate watering during the growing season. Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid overwatering to prevent bulb rot. During flowering, usually in spring, you can enjoy their colourful flowers and scent. When the flowers have finished blooming, you can remove the flower stems, but leave the leaves intact. The leaves collect nutrients for the bulb, which is essential for good flowering the following year.

Do you want to let hyacinths bloom indoors? Then choose so-called 'prepared bulbs'. Place them in pots with potting soil or in special hyacinth glass, in which only the roots are in water. Provide a cool, dark place for about 10 weeks until shoots appear. Then you can place them indoors and enjoy their flowers.
