Verzorging en onderhoud van de Hibiscus (Altheastruik)

Care and maintenance of the Hibiscus (Althea shrub)

The Hibiscus , also known as the Althea shrub , is a beautiful flowering garden plant that immediately evokes a tropical feeling with its exotic appearance. The large, colorful flowers immediately attract attention and are loved by garden lovers as well as by butterflies and bees. With the right care, this plant can bloom exuberantly every year and be a real eye-catcher in your garden.

The Hibiscus grows best in a sunny spot, preferably sheltered from strong winds. A spot against a wall or fence facing south is ideal. The plant likes warmth and light, which stimulates flowering. Provide a well-drained, nutritious soil. A mix of garden soil and compost is perfect to give the roots sufficient nutrition.

During dry periods it is important to water the Hibiscus regularly, especially in the summer months. The soil should be kept slightly moist, but not soaking wet, as this can cause root rot. A layer of mulch around the base of the plant will help to keep the soil moist and prevent weeds.

Fertilize the Hibiscus in spring and mid-summer with an organic fertilizer rich in potassium. This will not only promote growth but also the development of large, healthy flowers. As for pruning, the Hibiscus is fairly low-maintenance. Prune in early spring, before growth begins, to remove dead or weak branches. This will encourage the formation of new shoots and flowers.

In winter, the Hibiscus is sensitive to frost. Cover the plant with fleece or jute to protect it, especially in severe winters. In colder areas, you may consider putting the plant in a large pot, so that you can move it to a frost-free place in winter.
