Care and maintenance of Hatiora – Easter cactus
Share
The Hatiora , better known as the Easter cactus, is a colorful and charming succulent that gets its name from the beautiful flowers that usually bloom around Easter. This plant, native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, naturally grows as an epiphyte, meaning that it nestles on other plants or trees without damaging them. Thanks to its graceful, segmented stems and colorful flowers, the Hatiora is a popular houseplant.
Caring for an Easter cactus is easy if you keep its natural habitat in mind. Unlike most cacti, the Hatiora likes a humid environment and indirect light. Place the plant in a bright spot, but avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves. An east- or north-facing window is ideal, or a spot with filtered light.
Watering is important, but do so sparingly. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings, especially in spring and summer, when the plant is growing and flowering. In autumn and winter, during the dormant period, the Easter cactus needs less water. Preferably use rainwater or filtered water, because this plant can be sensitive to hard water.
The Hatiora prefers a well-draining soil mix, such as potting soil mixed with orchid soil or perlite, which will allow for adequate air circulation around the roots. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
Feed the plant in spring and summer with a weak fertilizer for cacti or houseplants to support growth and flowering. Stop fertilizing in autumn and winter, so that the plant can go into dormancy.
Pruning can be done after flowering to keep the plant compact and encourage new growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems to keep the plant healthy.
