Care and maintenance: Freesia, the fragrant flower bulb
Share
Freesias are loved for their beautiful, colorful flowers and wonderful scent. These bulbs are an excellent choice for both the garden and indoors, as they are easy to care for and have a long flowering period. Freesias bring a touch of elegance and freshness to any room or garden, and with the right care you can enjoy their beauty for a long time.
Freesias like a sunny, warm spot with well-drained soil. If you are planting them in the garden, choose a spot where they are protected from strong winds. Plant the bulbs in the spring, once there is no longer any risk of frost. Make sure you plant the bulbs about 5 centimetres deep, with a spacing of 5-8 centimetres between them, so that they have enough room to grow.
Watering is essential, but do so sparingly. Freesias like moist, but not soaked soil. Water as soon as the soil begins to dry out. During the growth phase, you can feed the plants with a potassium-rich fertilizer to encourage flowering. Once the flowers appear, you can remove the dead flowers to direct the plant's energy to the new flowers.
Freesias are moderately hardy and do not tolerate frost well. If you live in a colder region, dig up the bulbs in the fall. Let them dry and store them in a cool, dry place until the following spring. In milder climates, you can leave the bulbs in place and protect them with a layer of mulch.
