Achtergrond en geschiedenis: De reis van Zuid-Afrika naar Europa

Background and History: The Journey from South Africa to Europe

Freesias have a rich history that begins in South Africa, where the plant originally grows in the wild. The name “freesia” was given by Christian Friedrich Ecklon, a German botanist, who named the plant after his friend Friedrich Freese. Freesias were brought to Europe in the 19th century and have been loved for their ornamental value and fragrance ever since.

The flowers are often associated with innocence, purity and friendship, and are used in bouquets for special occasions such as weddings. In Victorian times, freesias symbolized trust, and were often given as a token of sincere affection.

There are numerous varieties of freesias available today, from classic single-flowered varieties to double blooms in a rainbow of colors. This variety makes freesias a favorite among growers and gardeners.
