Care and maintenance of Forsythia (Chinese bellflower)
Share
The Forsythia, better known as the Chinese bell, is one of the first to bloom in spring and is known for its bright yellow flowers. This shrub not only brings colour to the garden after a long winter, but is also very easy to maintain. With proper care, you can enjoy the spectacular floral splendour for years.
Forsythia grows best in a sunny location, but can also thrive in partial shade. The more sun the shrub receives, the more abundantly it flowers. The plant is not picky about soil types, as long as the soil is well-drained. However, a neutral to slightly acidic soil is preferred. Make sure that the soil remains moist, especially during dry periods in the summer.
Pruning is essential to keep Forsythia in top shape. Prune the shrub immediately after flowering, around April or May. Remove older branches that produce fewer flowers and cut back young shoots to encourage compact growth. A healthy Forsythia produces flowers on wood that grew the previous year, so never prune too late in the season.
Fertilization is usually not necessary, but you can add some compost or organic fertilizer to the base of the plant in spring to encourage flowering. Forsythia is very hardy and can tolerate cold winters well, making it ideal for temperate climates.
