Care and maintenance of the Echeveria pulvinata – Velvet plant

The Echeveria pulvinata , also known as the velvet plant, owes its name to the soft hairy leaves that have a velvety feel. This special succulent with its gray-green leaves and often red-tinted edges is not only a feast for the eyes, but also easy to care for. It originates from the warm, dry regions of Mexico and is ideal for both indoors and outdoors, as long as it gets enough light.

To grow the Echeveria pulvinata optimally, place it in a spot with lots of indirect sunlight. This will emphasize the characteristic colors of the plant. Indoors, a sunny windowsill is perfect, while outdoors it will thrive in a rock garden or on a sunny terrace. Make sure it doesn't get too much direct midday sun, as this can burn the leaves, especially if they are already a bit dry.

Like other succulents, the velvet plant requires little water. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. It needs even less water in the winter, when it is dormant. Use a well-draining potting soil, specifically formulated for cacti and succulents, to help drain excess water quickly.

The Echeveria pulvinata requires little fertilization, but a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) can help the plant grow stronger. This succulent grows slowly, so repotting is only necessary every few years. When repotting, choose a pot that is slightly wider than the current one, so that the roots have enough room to spread.

Although not frost-hardy, the velvet plant can be kept outdoors as long as temperatures do not drop below 5 °C. Bring it indoors in colder temperatures to prevent damage.
