Cissus is a genus in the vine family ( Vitaceae ), which also includes grapes. There are over 350 species within the genus Cissus, some of which are native to tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The name “Cissus” is derived from the Greek word kissos , meaning ivy, a reference to the plant’s climbing properties.
One of the best-known species, Cissus rhombifolia , is also called the king's vine because of its regal, lush appearance. Another popular species, Cissus antarctica , is known for its robust nature and graceful leaves. In many cultures, Cissus is valued for its ornamental value, but in some regions also for its medicinal properties. For example, some species are traditionally used in naturopathy for their healing effect on bones and joints.
Cissus has acquired a symbolic meaning throughout the centuries. It stands for growth, perseverance and connection, in keeping with its powerful climbing nature. These qualities make the plant not only a beautiful addition to your interior or garden, but also a plant with a deeper meaning.
