Care and maintenance of Chaenomeles japonica (Japanese quince)
Share
The Chaenomeles japonica , commonly known as Japanese quince, is a versatile and graceful shrub loved for its beautiful flowers and edible fruits. In early spring, often before the leaves appear, the Japanese quince blooms profusely with beautiful red, pink or orange flowers, making it a striking feature in any garden.
The Japanese quince is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in almost any type of soil, as long as it is not too wet. It likes a sunny spot, but can also survive in partial shade. Its compact growth makes it ideal for small gardens or for use as a low hedge.
Pruning is important to maintain the shape and growth of the shrub. The best time to prune is immediately after flowering, so that you do not remove new flower buds. Cut away dead or weak branches and prune the shrub lightly if necessary to maintain a compact shape.
The Japanese quince needs little water, unless it is very dry. Give some extra water during those periods, especially in the first year after planting. Fertilizing with organic fertilizer in the spring can stimulate flowering and fruit formation.
