Verzorging en onderhoud: optimaal genieten van Allium in je tuin

Care and maintenance: optimal enjoyment of Allium in your garden

Allium, also known as ornamental onion, is one of the most versatile flower bulbs you can plant in your garden. With its striking spherical inflorescences and vibrant colours, this plant instantly brings elegance and structure to any garden. But how do you ensure that your Allium stays healthy and gives years of pleasure?

Caring for Allium starts with the right location. These graceful bulbs love a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Therefore, choose a location where they get enough light, because that promotes growth and flowering. Plant the bulbs in the fall, about 10 to 15 centimeters deep, with the point upwards. Make sure there is enough space between the bulbs to prevent mold formation.

Watering is easy: Allium needs little water, except during longer dry periods. Too much water can even be harmful, because the bulbs are sensitive to rot. Fertilization is best done in early spring with organic fertilizer. This gives the bulbs an extra boost for a beautiful flowering. After flowering, it is wise to let the leaves die back; this helps the bulb to store nutrients for the next season. Pruning is not necessary, but you can remove the faded flowers to keep the garden tidy.
